Thor's Well

The weather was classic Oregon Coast, overcast with a bit of a chill in the air. The ocean throbbed, waves crashing on the rocks; impressive even at low tide. A dozen or so tourists crowded at the edge of the beach, flip flops slipping on the moss as they arrange their selfie sticks to their best advantage.

Cape Perpetua is known for the natural phenomenon known as Thor's Well. This sinkhole is only about 20 feet deep, but gives the impression of holding an unbroken stream of seawater. At high tide visitors can see the hole appear to fill and drain endlessly, although this can be dangerous to visitors who can lose their footing and hurt themselves against the harsh, basalt beach.

If you're driving down the Oregon Coast, this is a great area to stretch your legs and take advantage of the gorgeous ocean views. The coastline is moody and beautiful, perfect if you're itching to practice your photography skills.

To visit: Park at the Cook's Chasm pull-out, just south of the Cape Perpetua Visitor Center.
